American Fiction marks a new frontier and challenges our notions on what constitutes high art in a world coming down from the manic highs of a post 2020 world.

I laughed a lot, I cried a bit, I felt seen, I felt unseen, but most of all I left with a renewed hope that creativity is not dead after all.

I have been at a particularly strange crossroads since 2020 struggling to make sense of all the chaos. There has been a lot of confidence and bravado in the air with what seems like a distinct lack of actual grit and effort. No care and practice. Its felt like fake it till you make it to the extremes. We absorb things just because the internet says so without really thinking it through. Originality has felt formulaic.

Crypto. Massive descents from godlike heights without any real parables to go with it. Chaos. Wes Andersons last 5 movies.

To be creative is to dare to make it all up, not to fit parameters.

I am a tough critic.

American Fiction challenges what it is to create from experience. Fuck was good because it was written by a great author. Sintara Golden’s book was good because she learned and mastered her field as an editor. Thats it. Thats the story.

Cord, please make the dramatic monologue/motivational speech version.

Drag race girls i’m ready for the snatch game.

I want the Erika Jayne version.

I want the glee ending.

Its Commedia dell Arte. Its Comic Spirit. Its Dante. Its a wife of bath.

Try, with all your might, but also carefully and thoughtfully think about what it means to do it well.
